Wildlife At Summer Camp

Visit: Nature Summer Camp

Science camp
It is spring in the Northwoods, black bears are emerging from their dens and looking for food. Since at this time of year most of their natural food sources are limited, they look for food from any source they can get it, including bird feeders, garbage cans, grills, etc.  It is best to keep these things put away until other food sources are available to them.
Large groups of wild turkey have begun to break up and males are gobbling.  The fourth five-day spring wild turkey hunting period is Wed., May 4, through Sun., May 8.
An increasing number of migratory birds are continuing to show up in the area and more waterfowl are being seen on area lakes. Canada geese gostlings should start hatching around mid-May. Ruffed grouse should be drumming and woodcock and snipe should have started peenting.
In the evening you can hear the loud calling of wood frogs and spring peepers. Eagles are actively tending nests now and can also be seen migrating through the area this time of year. Ducks began their nest building in mid-April.
The current fire danger level for Price County is moderate; however, dry areas still exist and caution is needed until the grass greens up.

Education At Summer Camp

Camp can be just as educational as school, with children learning through experience. Through activities and play, children learn a wide range of skills and develop physically, emotionally, socially, and intellectually. At camp, children learn by doing, living, and experiencing things for themselves. It’s one thing to watch a program on television, but quite another to experience it in real life.
At camp, children are given ..........

Given the benefits of a sleepaway camp, it seems that all children should enroll. There are camps for almost all children, including those with special needs. However, there are certainly children who are not ready for an overnight camp experience. Some may not be mature enough to accept the separation from home. Though some camps accept children...

Old Fashioned Summer Camp

We all have memories of our childhood. For many these include times at Summer Camp. As we reflect on those Old-Fashioned summer camp days, void of Iphone, Ipods and youtube they bring back fond memories, when times were simpler. Recently I was recalling with some friends and we both had the same Ole’ summer camp story, “Our camp director pulled a little 19 inch black and white TV on the beach as we all gathered around to watch the Apollo 11 crew take their first steps on the moons suface. What were your most treasured camp memories? Did you like/hate camp? Do you feel that attending summer camp taught you any valuable life lessons? Do you still have camp friends that you keep in touch with? Do you send your own kids to camp during the summer? What was your favorite/worst craft activity? Below Heidi Kelly of Weltman, Weinberg and Reis Co asked her fellow workers to share their Old Fashioned Camp Memories. We hope you enjoy these stories from the WWR staff!

Nature Camp in Winter

Visit: Nature Summer Camp

During our winter stay at camp a local camp neighbor, Delon came by with his snowmobiles and offered to take Forrest and I on a nature tour. It was exciting we had a sunny day with balmy high 20 temps. As we zoomed past Picnic Island ( see video) our first stop was to look for the eagles. They were both their and sitting near the nest. It is about this time that eagles start to lay their eggs. So a good sign that we will see eaglets this summer. From their we went off across the lake and to a snowmobile trail system that covers most of the state of Wisconsin. As we traveled we saw many deer trails cutting through the woods. Often they would cross the snowmobile trail, they seem to like snow that is packed down and easier to walk on. As we looked deep into the woods, we saw deer looking at us being careful not to move so as not to be seen. In all we saw... click to read and see more photos

Benefits of Summer Camp

Visit: Nature Camp Website
 100_3679
Summer camp can be a bridge to the world over which a child can carry the seeds of attributes already planted at home and in school. The right summer camp can be the ideal first step away from home and family, because a good summer camp is still a safe environment for learning independence. Summer camp is a place for fun and the joy and passion of growth free from the stress of modern fascination for achievement. Camp is a respite from the technology that can rule a child’s life and distract from human attributes rather than being a tool to implement them. A camper can discover and develop attributes like these over the course of every summer and have a great deal of fun doing so.........

Gifted Children

post card 5Often parents hear of the importance of teaching the whole child. Yet, what does that mean? It means that we need to consider the child as a whole, not just the intellectual needs of a child but social and emotional ones as well. This admirable goal, often is not applied to intellectual children.
