Building Relationships

Over the next few months at Swift Nature Camp and for the rest of your life for that matter you will be closely working with people. As social being we are always motivating and working in teams. The tips you learn from this book will not only help you in working with campers but it will help you in working with adults. This book is not only for camp, it is for life and I hope that you purchase a copy for yourself and learn the basic principals. Move your life from the Gotcha doing things wrong to the Whale done catching people doing right. GET THE BOOK AND GET AHEAD!

Most people are focusing on catching people doing things wrong (GOTcha)
instead of catching people doing things right (Whale Done!).

First you must....

1. Build trust

2. Accentuate the positive

3. When mistakes occur, redirect the energy

The ABC's of performance:

A = Activator - Whatever gets the performance going

B = Behavior - The performance that occurs

C = Consequence - Your response to the performance

Kinds of consequences:

1. No response

2. Negative response

3. *Redirection

4. *Positive response

* these are the ones we want

So what Redirection response look like:

-Describe the error or problem as soon as possible, clearly and without blame

-Show its negative impact

-If appropriate, take the blame for not making the task clear

-Go over the task in detail and make sure it is clearly understood

-Express your continuing trust and confidence in the person

The Whale Done response-Praise progress, it's a moving target!

-Praise people immediately, even baby steps

-Be specific about what they did right or almost right

-Share your positive feelings about what they did

-Encourage them to keep up the good work

Helpful Hints

  • Know what desired behavior you want- set your expectations
  • Say something positive when you see progress -Catch me doing something right
  • Create the positive in all relationships
  • When you accentuate the positive you'll begin to pay attention to what you do or say AFTER people perform.
  • You reward progress - any movement in the desired direction
  • Never assume you know what motivates a person. So Ask.
  • Whale Done! only works when you're sincere and honest.
  • It never hurts to toot your own horn once in a while.
  • If you catch yourself doing things right, everything in your life will improve &endash; especially your relationships &endash; that's because it is fun to be around someone who likes himself and is positive toward others.
